The number of Americans who had had sex with someone of the same sex doubled between 19—for both men (4.5% in 1990 to 8.2% in 2014) and women (3.6% in 1990 to 8.7% in 2014).
These increases didn't appear to be driven exclusively by people who identify as gay or lesbian, but by people who have had sex with people both sexes, says study author Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University and author of the book “What we’re seeing is this movement toward more sexual freedom,” says Twenge.
